Project Details

The Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility is an all-male behavioral health facility responsible for providing comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and treatment to the criminally committed throughout the State of Alabama. This hospital serves patients with serious behavioral health issues involving schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, and more.

Established in 1981, the facility was in need of renovations and expansion. TRO JB was commissioned to design for existing renovations and a new two-story addition of 96 beds and a new CEP connection to the existing facility. The renovation also included electrical upgrades and renovations to the existing patient pods.

Taylor Hardin admits around 150-180 patients each year. The more short-term patients are there for pre-trial evaluation and stay an average of 45 days. Residents are allowed to roam freely but are heavily supervised within a secure living area.

This transformative project was brought to fruition for the State of Alabama Department of Mental Health by way of University of Alabama project management and the collaborative dream team of designers, consultants, and builders—each bringing deep expertise and shared purpose to the table.

From the outset, the vision for this facility was grounded in dignity, compassion, and healing. Key design principles included maximizing natural light, incorporating positive and calming imagery, and embedding safety and security throughout every space. Equal emphasis was placed on long-term maintainability to ensure the environment remains supportive and functional for years to come.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a project that directly enhances the care environment for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. It is our hope that this space will serve as a model for therapeutic design and a beacon of support for the patient population it serves.
