East Alabama Medical Center - Spencer Cancer Center

PROJECT DETAILS

To meet the growing demand for oncology services at East Alabama Medical Center, TRO Jung|Brannen was commissioned to design a new freestanding two-story Cancer Center located adjacent to the main hospital campus. Situated on a moderately sloping wooded site, the upper level provides eye level views from the medical treatment area to the existing tree canopy and allows patient entrances to be located on both levels to address ease of access for radiation and medical oncology treatment programs.

The Cancer Center’s main entrance, located on the upper Level, is designed with a two story lobby and incorporates clearstory natural lighting and the center’s reception area. An outpatient pharmacy, medical boutique, and staff offices are located off the main lobby. Registration, Patient and family waiting are separated from the main lobby to provide privacy, family comfort and access to the exterior gardens.

Medical Oncology is also located on the second level and provides 38 infusion bays, 4 private Oncologist offices, each with 3 exams rooms and nursing support, a dedicated infusion pharmacy, and reference laboratory. Clearstory lighting is provided over the entire infusion area to provide indirect natural lighting.

Radiation oncology is located on the lower level and includes two linear accelerators and one HDR vault, a CT Simulator, and a PET CT suite. Additional areas include staff and radiation oncologist offices, exams and treatment rooms, and a private radiation patient entrance and waiting area. Additional amenities include conference rooms and a café with access to the garden area.
